About the Ghost Ships in "Harbourville"
Until the mid-1920's, schooners arrived in Harbourville and goods where transported down the mountain to service the Annapolis Valley. The memory of this busy harbour and the visiting schooners is depicted in the painting "Harbourville".
| To achieve
the ghostly image of the two- and three-mast ships and
create the effect of transparency, the artist
meticulously worked around the shapes, leaving the canvas
untouched where he thought the schooners should be, cross
checking with authentic turn-of-the century photographs. Longtime residents of the area speak of seeing the shadowy images of schooners still sailing the Bay of Fundy. |
